The Executive Chairman of Nnewi North Local Government Area, Mr Echezona Anazodo, took a significant step towards improving the region’s infrastructure by touring damaged roads in Nnewi with representatives from the Anambra State Ministry of Works on October 29, 2024. This move followed his recognition of the dire state of the road network in Nnewi North since assuming office. The chairman’s efforts to revitalize Nnewi’s infrastructure paid off as Governor Charles Soludo swiftly responded to his call for action by sending his team to assess, cost, and prioritize the reconstruction of these roads. The roads included; Owerri Road, Igwe Orizu Road as well as Nkwo to Nkwo Road. In its ongoing move to ensure adequate security for its citizens, the Anambra State government has demolished three kidnappers’ dens in three different locations in the Nnewi North Local Government Area of the State. The locations are; Ndiezenwankwo Uruagu, Umumejiaku Uruagu and Obiofia Nnewichi, Nnewi North. According to the Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, the operations were led by the State Deputy Governor; Onyekachukwu Ibezim, Special Adviser on Community Security; Chief Ken Emeakayi, House Committee Chairman on Security and Majority Leader; Hon. Ikenna Ofodeme and Chairman of Nnewi North LG; Mr. Echezona Anazodo and Hon. Augustine Ike.The destruction of the criminals’ hideouts, according to the government, demonstrates strong commitment of the State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, to making Anambra a peaceful state for its people and visitors. Earlier last month the state government had launched a war on criminality in the state with the establishment of the Anambra security system, ‘Agunaechemba,’ and an Operation code-named ‘Operation Udo Ga-Ach’ (Meaning Operation Peace Shall Reign). To combat crime effectively, the ‘Operation Udo Ga-Achi’ personnel were equipped with the best-in-class tracking system, a command-and-control system that enhances the use of voice, video and data in security management, deploying Artificial Intelligence-powered surveillance cameras to cover the communities in Anambra, and walkie talkies, among other facilities. It also has special task forces on drugs, touting, cultism, and criminal idolatry and is active in all parts of the state, with patrols and pin-down stop-and-search operations as necessary. Nnewi existed as an independent kingdom from the 15th century to 1904, when British colonial administration occupied the kingdom. Nnewi kingdom was founded on four quarters (large villages), namely: Otolo, Uruagu, Umudim, and Nnewi-Ichi. Before the colonial era, Nnewi was a major trading and cultural center, known for its skilled blacksmiths and innovative industries.
Nnewi is home to many major indigenous manufacturing industries including Ibeto Group of Companies, Cutix and ADswitch, Uru Industries Ltd, Omata Holdings Ltd, and more. The great majority of industrialists in the cluster of spare parts factories in Nnewi are also traders, and most of these traders are producing one or more of the products they specialize in marketing as traders.
As a fast-developing city and a major industrial and commercial hub in Africa, Nnewi experiences voluminous financial activities. Palm oil, cosmetics, motor, and motorcycle spare parts, books, and textiles are produced in commercial quantity. Major trading centers include Nkwo Nnewi market, Nwafor market, and Eke Ichi Market.
Nnewi hosts a number of institutions and places of learning and healing, including Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH). NAUTH provides specialized and comprehensive medical care. The hospital is at the forefront of medical research and postgraduate training.
